Shrunken Apple Heads Halloween Craft

The queen of Halloween, Martha Stewart, offers this fun shrunken apple head craft on her website.
Tools and Materials:Firm, unbruised apple, preferably Granny Smith
Knife
Marker or pencil
1 cup lemon juice
1 tablespoon salt
Stick or branch

Shrunken Apple Head How-To:1. Peel and core the apple.

2. Using a pencil or marker, draw facial features, including eyes, a nose, and a mouth, on the apple; be sure to draw the features large enough so they won't vanish when the apple shrinks.

3. Using the outlines as your guide, carve the apple to resemble a skull.

4. Combine lemon juice and salt in bowl. Soak the apple for 30 seconds. Pat dry.

5. Set the apple in a warm, dry spot; after several days, the apple will shrink, and the features will distort.

6. Insert a stick or branch into the bottom of the head and place it in a vase.

Halloween Safety Tips

Have adult supervision. Accompany your kids if you don’t think they’re old enough to trick-or-treat on their own. Babies: Make sure you keep child's arms and legs in the stroller at all times, and everyone should stay away from open flames!
There is safety in numbers. If they’re old enough to trick-or-treat without an adult, tell your kids to stay in a group, and look both ways before crossing!
Map out your plan. Designate a route before your kids begin trick-or-treating, and make sure they stick to it. If they have cell phones, make sure they are charged and the kids know to call you if needed.
Take the long way 'round. Have your kids trick-or-treat in areas where there are a lot of people around. They should also avoid taking short-cuts through alleys and parking lots. Stick to areas they know!
Try trick-or-treat-friendly homes. Ensure your kids only visit houses with lights on. And, you might also suggest the houses they visit have some sort of Halloween decoration on the porch. Stay in well-lighted areas!
Stay outside. Make sure your kids don’t go inside someone’s house. They can get their candy from the porch. Teach a child NEVER to go inside the house!
Remain visible. Dress your kids in a bright costume so others can see them. If their costume is dark, have your kids wear reflective strips or carry a glow stick or flashlight.
Remember, shorter = safer. Goes without saying but just in case you forget, ensure your kids’ costumes aren’t so long that they can trip over them!
Don't cover the face. Instead of masks, have your kids wear [skin-safe] make-up so they can see better.
Quality-check treats. Check your kids’ candy before they eat it. Throw out any candy that is not in its original wrapper or looks like it has been tampered with. (And pick the best candy for yourself of course! Ha!)
Say "no" to strangers.Tell your kids to never accept a ride or go anywhere with a stranger.
Obey the law. Encourage your kids to follow all the regular rules for walking around. That includes looking both ways before crossing, obeying all traffic laws and using cross walks and crossing lights where available.
Have a great time! Finally, make sure your kids have tons of fun and get lots and lots of candy.

Ring the Pumpkin

Line up three large pumpkins with stems, to form a ring toss. Use embroidery hoops or make hoops with rope and duct tape. Mark a throwing line on the floor and take turns trying to ring a pumpkin stem. It doesn't matter if the players make a "ringer" or not, reward them with small prizes or stickers. Smaller children can attempt to ring an entire large pumpkin with a hula hoop.

Roll the Gourd

This sounds simple enough...but it's quite a challenge! Use empty plastic pop bottles for bowling pins. Each child gets three chances to roll the gourd into the pins. The gourds go every which way but straight. Lots of giggles for this one.

Popcorn Relay Race

The object of this game is to be the first team to successfully transport popcorn from a full bowl to an empty bowl, using only a small measuring cup.

On one side of the room place the bowls filled with popped popcorn. This is where the teams will line up. Then place the empty bowls on the other side of the room. Players take turns filling the cup, running to empty bowl to pour out the popcorn and returning to the team to pass the cup to the next player. Continue until the bowl is empty. This is a messy game - plan it for the end of the party! (Note: popcorn is a choking hazard for children under three).

Cotton Ball Scoop Game

Fill large mixing bowls with cotton balls and give each guest a spoon. Kids must scoop out as many cotton balls as possible in one minute - without using fingers!

I'm on a 1960's TV Shows kick today, having just written about the Addams Family TV lyrics (which I had been singing wrong all my life!) Next up is THE MUNSTERS TV Show, and Herman Munster in particular, played by actor Fred Gwynne.

Herman Munster was of course a big sweet bumbling Frankenstein character, and I was thinking about him while flashing back to my childhood and watching that The Munsters and the Addams Family. Those were such fun and wholesome (but quirky) family times.

So when I was going to post about my BABY FRANKENSTEIN COSTUME in 100% Cotton, and my other Cotton Infant Halloween Costumes in 5 Spooky-cute styles, my mind went through a time warp to the classic 60's tv shows.

Wow, set the way back machine Sherman! (Actually it was spelled WABAC! and Mr. Peabody the dog, and his boy Sherman from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show were also faves!)

The Addams Family was one of my favorite TV shows when I was a child, and the theme song was one of the best. Catchy and easy to sing along with, I have remembered it for decades. Or have I...

I was humming the tune in my head today while thinking about my halloween cotton baby costumes, which are also creepy, kooky, mysterious and ooky (not to mention adorably cute!) I thought I would write the lyrics here, from memory, because of course I sang them hundreds of times in my childhood.

But just in case my memory was a little off, I researched the lyrics online first, and was shocked (shocked, I tell you!) to discover I had been singing them wrong all these years!

I had pictured them up on their haunted mansion roof with their shawls on, looking at the moon and enjoying the night air....

Now I have to re-learn one of my favorite childhood memories (if I want to do it right).

The Switch Witch - What to do with Halloween Candy

What do you do with all the extra Halloween Candy you don't want your Trick-or-Treating children to eat? Ok, so you pick out your favorites and let your child have some, but then what?

How about starting a new Halloween Tradition, and leaving out Halloween Candy for the Switch Witch? It's kind of like leaving cookies and milk out for Santa and his reindeer the night before Christmas, only the child leaves out all the leftover candy on Halloween night....

The Switch Witch comes in the night and takes the candy... and in it's place she leaves a toy! It needs to be something desirable that the child will find worth having given up candy for, but it doesn't have to be expensive.

If you like to keep some of the candy in the frig or freezer and ration it out a few pieces each day, that works for some people too, but either way the Switch Witch is a fun idea.

P.S. Be sure to leave a piece on candy taped or hung on the child's bedroom door [or front door of your house] so the Switch Witch knows this house wants to switch!

Our Harrisons Halloween Costumes have fun spooky styles for both boys and girls:

Frankenbaby is an adorable baby FRANKENSTEIN with pants, shirt with attached vest, soft padded hat with 'bolts' in neck and velcro closure. Black booties are included, but your child's own socks will work just fine too.

Dracula is a clever version of a VAMPIRE, with white onesie, black pants, black cape and black booties. The onesie has a great vampire necklace design imprinted in the fabric in red, which matches the red waistband 'cumberbund'.

Scary Spider has a black onesie with 'spider legs' and 'spider web' design attached to the long sleeves. Black pants, spider head 'hat' and black booties complete the look. For boys or girls!

Vampira is a GIRL VAMPIRE with soft tshirt style black dress, inlaid faux spider necklace, black cape and booties. Cute red fringe on bottom of dress adds a touch of whimsey.
Witchie is a GIRL WITCH which includes a soft cotton witch hat in a hip design (choice of two hat sizes), black dress with orange cat embroidered on front, and adorable orange and black striped booties. Optional socks are a fun accessory that can be worn with other halloween season outfits too!
